How well do we know Jesus Christ?
Knowing Jesus Christ is our primary objective in life,
but the question is, how well do we know Him? From early childhood I learnt
that, “God made me to know Him, love Him and serve Him in this world and to be
happy with Him forever in the next.” The scripture is full with admonitions
such as, “Do not
lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have
put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him
who created him” (Colossians 3:9-10).
Because
of Christ’s preeminence the apostle Paul wrote; “For this reason we also, since
the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be
filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual
understanding;
that
you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every
good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians
1:9-10).
The
apostle Peter encouraging the steadfastness of the brethren wrote; “You
therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall
from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but
grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the
glory both now and forever. Amen” (2Peter 3:
17-18).
We are
told that “He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the
heavens, that He might fill all things. And He Himself gave some to be
apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for
the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the
body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge
of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the
fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and
carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the
cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may
grow up in all things into Him who is the head --- Christ --- from whom the
whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to
the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the
body for the edifying of itself in love” (Ephesians
4:10-16).
The
true knowledge of Jesus Christ is paramount, if we are to grow to a perfect
man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, for: “We all,
with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being
transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of
the Lord” (2Corinthians 3:18).
Therefore,
our spiritual growth is dependent on how well we know Jesus Christ and how much
of His nature that is being formed in us as we have been duly admonished
saying; “My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is
formed in you” (Galatians
4:19).
And if
the nature of Jesus Christ has been formed in us we will honor Him just as we
honor the Father because the admonition is, “that all should honor the Son just
as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the
Father who sent Him”. And this I am afraid is the major downfall of modern day
Christianity the sin of irreverence. But truly these times of ignorance God has
overlooked and now commands all men everywhere to repent.
