The three integral components of
a burnt offering
There are three integral
components of a burnt offering and although burnt offering in the literal sense
has been reformed. Nevertheless, the rationale for the burnt offering remains
the same and more significantly we now have the reality instead of the copy and
shadow of the reality.
And so, a burnt offering is a
combination of three integral, inseparable elements:
- A
lamb, ram, or bull without blemish
This was a copy and shadow of the
reality and foreshadowed Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God slain from the
foundation of the world and who takes away the sins of the world and now is
seated at the right hand of the Father as our High Priest interceding on our
behalf.
- A
Grain/Meal offering
This mixture of fine flour, mixed
with oil (Unleavened Bread), was a copy and shadow of the reality and
represented the body of Jesus Christ as alluded to by Jesus Himself Who, “ took
bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take,
eat; this is My body" (Matthew 26:26).
- A
Drink offering
The wine was the copy and shadow of the
reality and represents the blood of Jesus Christ again as alluded to by Jesus
Christ Who, took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to His disciples, saying,
"Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for many for the remission of sins” (Matthew
26:27-28).
It is the combination of all
three elements that makes a burnt offering complete. For thus says the Lord;
“Now this is what you shall offer on the altar: two lambs of the first year,
day by day continually. One lamb you shall offer in the morning and the other lamb
you shall offer at twilight (between the two evenings). With one lamb shall be
one-tenth of an ephah of flour mixed with one fourth of a hin of pressed oil,
and one-fourth of a hin of wine as a drink offering. And the other lamb you
shall offer at twilight; and you shall offer with it the grain offering and the
drink offering, as in the morning, for as a sweet aroma, an offering made by fire
to the Lord” (Exodus 29:38-41).
And so in short, the real burnt
offering is Jesus Christ Who is our gateway, the new and living way by which
one comes to the Father and hence the reason why Jesus quite equivocally stated;
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through Me” (John 14:6).
According to the apostle Paul, what
gives us the boldness to enter the holiest in the presence of the Father is the
blood of Jesus represented by the wine, the truth is Jesus Christ Himself the
Word of God Who is now seated at the right hand of the Father interceding on
our behalf and the new and living way to the Father is through the flesh of
Jesus Christ represented by the unleavened bread and so, this is the medium by
which we are to draw near to the Father.
Now according to the apostle Paul, this is the
main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is
seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a
Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected,
and not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and
sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One (Jesus Christ) also have
something to offer” (Hebrews 8:1-3).
Unfortunately, this is an area where most believers have not fully grasped and have received the grace of God in vain, but these times of ignorance God has overlooked but now commands all men everywhere to repent.
