The last but not the least significant reason for observing the Lord's Sabbaths is the rationale or objective for observing them. The objective or rationale for observing the Sabbaths is that, they are a
perpetual sign between God and His people throughout their generations to
remind them that the Lord is the One who sanctifies them and that day is holy
both to the Lord and to His people. The way one acknowledges and reverence God
as the Lord is by observing His Sabbaths (plural) ( Leviticus 19:3, 30, 26:2; Ezekiel
20: 12, 20).
The
Sabbaths are also memorials of what the Lord did on that particular day, for
example the weekly Sabbath is to remind us of God’s creation as we have been
duly admonished saying; “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days
you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the
LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, or your son, or your daughter,
or your male servant, or your female servant, or your cattle, or your stranger
who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the
earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore
the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it” (Exodus 20:8-11).
And
if we claim to be believers this is what that is expected of us; “For we who
have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: "So I swore in My wrath,
' They shall not enter My rest,' "although the works were finished from
the foundation of the world. For He has spoken in a certain place of the
seventh day in this way: "And God rested on the seventh day from all His
works"; and again in this place: "They shall not enter My rest."
Since
therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first
preached did not enter because of disobedience, again He designates a certain
day, saying in David, "Today," after such a long time, as it has been
said: "Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts."
For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of
another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who
has entered His (God’s) rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did
from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall
according to the same example of disobedience. (Hebrews 4:3-11).
And
very significantly, they were ordained specifically to offer the Lord the food
for His offerings which is besides or in addition to everything else even the
observance of the Sabbath itself, for we have been duly instructed saying; “These
are the feasts of the LORD which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire to the
LORD, a burnt offering and a grain offering, a sacrifice and drink
offerings, everything on its day ---besides the Sabbaths of the LORD, besides
your gifts, besides all your vows, and besides all your freewill offerings
which you give to the LORD” (Leviticus 23:37-38).
Therefore,
the main objective or the rationale for have a holy convocation is to offer the
Lord the food for His offerings.
Let
us consider also the fact that, Jesus Christ
the Lord God of the Old Testament, the One who gave the laws to Moses is the
same yesterday, today, and forever. Therefore, if the Lord’s Sabbaths were
required to be observed in the past, will be required to be observed in the
future as we have been duly instructed saying; “For as the new heavens and the
new earth which I will make shall remain before Me," says the LORD, "
So shall your descendants and your name remain. And it shall come to pass that
from one New Moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, all flesh shall
come to worship before Me," says the LORD” ( Isaiah 66:22-23).
I
therefore humbly beg to ask this question, why is observing the Lord’s Sabbaths
such a burden for those who profess to be believers in Jesus Christ?
