BELIEVE
THAT JESUS CHRIST IS THE BREAD OF LIFE
The
third important aspect of believing in Jesus Christ is to believe that Jesus
Christ is the bread of life. Jesus stated categorically, “I tell you the truth,
he who believes has everlasting life. I am the bread of life. Your forefathers
ate the manna in the desert, yet they died, but here is the bread that comes
down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. I am the living bread that
came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever, this
bread is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (John
6:47-51).
Jesus
Christ clarified this statement, and confirmed it as an everlasting covenant on
the night before He was crucified when He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and
gave it to His disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” This covenant
became effective after His death, for where a testament is involved, the death
of the one who made it must be established. For a testament takes effect only
at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.
Therefore
believing Jesus Christ also entails believing that He has given us His flesh to
eat and His blood to drink. For thus He said; “I tell you the truth, unless you
can eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in
you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will
raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is real food and My blood is real
drink, whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.
Just
as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so the one who
feeds on Me will live because of Me. This is the bread that came down from
heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread
will live forever” (John 6:53-58).
The
bread of life is our righteousness: it is the new and living way, and the
better hope by which we draw near to the Father, this is the way that we are
being reconciled to the Father, as it is written; “Once you were alienated from
God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior; but now He
has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy
in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation” (Colossians
1:21-22).
The
apostle Paul further endorsed this belief by saying; “Therefore, brethren,
since we have confidence to enter the most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by
a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, His body, and
since we have a great High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near to
God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts
sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed
with pure water (Hebrews 10:19-22).
Sin
no matter how insignificant one might think it is, separates us from God, and
the wages of sin is death. Since the life of every creature is in the blood,
God has given it upon the altar to make atonement for the soul; for it is the
blood that makes atonement for the soul. The blood of animals could not clear
the conscience and present the worshiper perfect, so now we have a new hope by
which we draw near to God.
Unfortunately,
many professing believers in Jesus Christ do not take this aspect of believing
in Jesus Christ literally despite the fact that Jesus categorically stated; “This
is the bread which comes down from heaven, which one may eat of it and not die.
I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this
bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which
I shall give for the life of the world " (John 6:50-51).
Not
only did Jesus Christ offered us His flesh to eat but also encourages us to
feed on Him for thus He said; “As the living Father sent Me, and I live because
of the Father, so he who feeds on Me
will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down from heaven --- not
as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live
forever" (John 6:
57-58).
So then, what does it means to feed on something? To feed is to regularly partake of something as a means of growth and sustenance. And so the question is how often should one partake of the body of Christ in order to live forever? Is it once a year! Every three months! Or is it on a daily basis?
