1. Believer are indebted to live and walk in the
Spirit
There
is a definite walk or way of life that is in accordance to the Spirit; and so
we have been admonished saying; “Those who live according to the Spirit, set their
minds on the things of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. It is
incumbent therefore that believers both live and walk in the Spirit, because
those who are Christ's have
crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Now
the way a believer demonstrates his/her indebtedness to the Spirit is by
depicting the character of the new man which is stated as follows; “Therefore,
as the elect of God, holy and
beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long-suffering;
bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint
against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do'.
“But
above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let
the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one
body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all
wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual
songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in
word or deed, do all in the
name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:12-17).
One
who lives and walks in the Spirit demonstrates it by producing the fruit of the
Spirit which is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those
who are Christ's have crucified
the flesh with its passions and desires.” There is further confirmation of this
indebtedness to the Spirit stating; “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk
in the Spirit, let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one
another” (Galatians
5:22-26).
And,
the way of life in the Spirit is stipulated by the word of God because Jesus
Christ stated quite emphatically; “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh
profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63).
Therefore,
to live and to walk in the Spirit is to be indebted to the word of God and not following
the customs and traditions of men which is vain and useless.
