1. Believers
are not indebted to the flesh
Believers
have been duly instructed saying; “Therefore, brethren, we are debtors --- not
to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the
flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the
body, you will live” (Romans 8:12-13).
Now
the reason why a believer is not indebted to the flesh, it is because, “those
who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, and
to be carnally minded is death,
because the carnal mind is
enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.
So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
It
is therefore incumbent on all believers to mortify the deeds of the flesh,
because those in whom Christ dwells, the body is dead with regards to sin, and
therefore are admonished to; “Put to death your members which are on the earth:
fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is
idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of
disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.'
“But
now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy,
filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have
put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge
according to the image of Him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor
Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all” (Colossians 3:5-11).
The
works of the flesh are easily manifested, for it is clearly stated; “Now the
works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness,
lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of
wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness,
revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who
practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21).
